Leonid Afremov Pin It

“Evening trolley on the square”

There is only one person in our modern age times that can make the colours dance on a canvas and also can make the viewer have a synetsthetic breakdown. Well, that unique artist is Leonid Afremov – born in 1955 in an ex Soviet Republic and later immigrated to Israel and the USA he had a life full of hardship and constant struggles with the stereotypes coming from people that should’ve seen his genius in the first place. He is the prototype of the artist that never gives up and never surrenders his path.

“Helsinki.Sail Boats At The Yacht Club”

I’ve noticed that he defines his style as Impressionistic but I would rather say that he has a mixture of styles that defines his signature. There is some Pointillism and also some Expressionism (since they reflect certain memories and emotions) that cannot be missed.

Synesthesia is one of the psychological effects that his art shares with the viewer and many have said that they “can smell the colours” or even better”hear the colours” and it is true that due to the high contrasts used, the effect is a very powerful one. Human eye loves contrasts and Afremov’s  has multiplied that by 10.

He is one of those painters that can make way to both the rich homes and the modest ones. As far as I noticed on his website (that I will link in the end) the prices vary and anyone could afford one of his artworks. I love when an artist’s statement sounds like this: ”Leonid Afremov tries to draw the viewer to have a certain feeling rather than tell a story via the painting, or have the viewer see the world how he sees it. The neutral attributes of Afremov’s art make the paintings appealing to almost any social, ethnic and age group.(…)

Leonid Afremov loves cats and other animals; he has had cats throughout his entire life. He has painted many paintings of cats, dogs, horses, tigers and even giraffes. The only political paintings he has are of bull-fighting , where he tries to show the viewer the cruel nature of the sport and discourage the viewers from liking bull-fighting.” Here is a major contrast between other modern artists that have an Ego problem  and Leonid Afremov that is not only humble but also a great soul.
